History
In 2021, the National Research and Development Agency (ANID) announced the first results of the Millennium Institutes in Natural and Exact Sciences, awarding the Millennium Institute for Biodiversity of Antarctic and Subantarctic Ecosystems (BASE) as a center of excellence for the development of scientific research.
Thus, the BASE Institute was created as a non-profit foundation to implement the Millennium Institute for Biodiversity of Antarctic and Subantarctic Ecosystems project. Since the formation of its research lines, the BASE Millennium Institute seeks to study the past, present, and future of Antarctic and subantarctic biodiversity: the fate of a unique biota in a changing world.
The BASE Millennium Institute brings together specialists in biodiversity, conservation, and international law to integrate advanced knowledge linked to the Southern Ocean. We seek to ensure that knowledge is used in decision-making oriented toward conservation and the generation of ideas and new projects, contributing to new proposals for Antarctic governance based on science, peace, and sustainability.
The BASE Millennium Institute is made up of 11 principal investigators, 9 associate members, and a significant number of early-career researchers at various stages of training. It seeks to strengthen gender equity; therefore, since its formation, 40% of its team is made up of women researchers and professionals.
