Players can explore seven Antarctic ecosystems, collect samples of native species, complete scientific field journals, and identify human-induced pollution to help protect Antarctic biodiversity. Through these activities, Antarctic Metaverse invites students, teachers, and families to discover the so-called “continent of the future.”
Featuring an intuitive interface and available as a downloadable computer game, the story is set in the year 2035. Players travel by plane from the city of Punta Arenas, in Chile’s Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, to the fictional Molinari Island, where their Antarctic scientific adventure begins.
From there, the journey continues on foot, allowing players to explore Antarctic ecosystems and take part in scientific diving expeditions. Along the way, they discover how a massive glacier transformed into the fictional Rivera Glacier Bay, while learning how Antarctic species are adapting to environmental change.
The game features 26 Antarctic species and was developed with the support of 14 researchers from the BASE Millennium Institute Biodiversity of Antarctic and Subantarctic Ecosystems, who served as scientific advisors. Distribution was supported by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), the Cape Horn International Center for Global Change Studies and Biocultural Conservation (CHIC), the Yagán Usi – Martín González Calderón Territorial Museum, the Puerto Williams Cultural Committee, the National Youth Institute (INJUV), Fundación Tremendas, the Science Office of the Municipality of Cerro Navia, ALGA, the National Cultural Heritage Service – Los Ríos Region, and the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh).
