Through its “Science Journalism Internship Program” focused on Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic regions, the Communications and Education Office of the BASE Millennium Institute (DIRECOM BASE), annually opens calls for applications to journalism students from the regions of Magallanes, Los Ríos, Biobío, Valparaíso, and Santiago, with the goal of contributing to the development of human capital in the field of public science communication.
The students are guided by professor Mg. Nadia Politis to strengthen their communication skills through thematic modules. At the same time, they work on creating digital and audiovisual communication pieces, as well as providing on-site coverage of conferences, science fairs, and public outreach talks.
In addition to incorporating and strengthening communication tools, the practice of science journalism aims to help students understand the importance of research in Chile, as well as the crucial role that public science communication plays in the processes of knowledge transfer and appropriation.
